Sales, rebates & coupons
To compare deals, find the final price of each one. The lowest final price wins.
Key steps
- Percent off: price × (1 − rate).
- Rebate or coupon: subtract the dollar amount.
- Order matters: discount first, then the coupon (unless told otherwise).
- Buy one, get one 50% off on two equal items = 25% off both.
Worked example
$120 headphones: 20% off or a $25 rebate?
- 20% off: 120 × 0.8 = $96. Rebate: 120 − 25 = $95.
- Answer: the rebate, by $1
Watch out: A percent deal grows with the price; a dollar deal doesn’t. On expensive items, percent off usually wins.
